When both Nintendo and Sony announced in 2004 that they were planning on releasing next-generation handheld consoles in the Spring of this year, a good old-fashioned console battle was expected, as two giants of the industry fought for dominance in a market previously lorded over by Nintendo. However, it became apparent during the course of 2005 that Nintendo looked very likely to hit their deadline, but that Sony did not. This was borne out in March when the Nintendo DS console hit our shelves, but with not a peep out of Sony regarding their highly anticipated PlayStation Portable (PSP). After much waiting and wondering, a September 1st release date has finally been confirmed by Sony. The reason given for the long delay of the European release is that the demand for the console in Japan and the US has been so high that all of the units that Sony had been producing had to be shipped to those regions, leaving insufficient stock for a European-wide release. Hmmm, ok. Sony’s announcement means that the DS will have a head start of nearly half a year, but if you look at what the PSP is capable of, it looks to be well worth the wait.

That’s not to say that it will only appeal to those looking for multi-functionality though, because as a standalone games console it, quite simply, rocks! The graphics are the equivalent to the PS2, and have to be seen to be believed – you just won’t believe you’re really playing a hanheld console. And if the long list of the PSP’s abilities wasn’t impressive enough, it’s all wrapped up in a sleek, beautiful design, that only adds to the must-have quotient of the machine. When the next-generation comes along and blows out of the water everything that has come before it, you know you’re onto a winner, and the PSP is a winner through and through. Even if you’ve never been tempted to try out handheld gaming, this gadget will make you sit up and take notice.
