There’s a special occasion coming up, and you’re craving a silk press to go with your outfit. But there’s one problem: you have a deep wave wig, and you’re not sure how to straighten a deep wave wig without messing up its juicy curls. Well, we’ve got you covered. It’s actually not that difficult to do, and after this, you should be more confident to try one.

1. Buy Good-Quality Hair

The first step is to buy really good-quality wigs. Poor-quality wigs are usually made with damaged hair, so they probably won’t hold up well to being straightened, even with these tips.

2. Work on Clean, Moisturized Hair in Small Sections

In our experience, starting on clean and moisturized hair reduces frizziness, so you get a sleeker look.

The biggest mistake people make is to work in large sections. Large sections take longer to straighten, and you end up having to do multiple passes on each section to get it straight. The more passes you do, the more likely you will cause heat damage to your hair, which will keep you from being able to do a wet look on your curly unit.

3. Use Heat Protectant

You’re probably wondering if these even work, but they actually do! Heat protectants provide a layer between your hair and the hot tool that can reduce the chances of your hair suffering heat damage. And there are scientific studies that prove this that you can read up on, so please make sure to use one before you start heat styling.

4. Keep Your Tools Under 350°F

When curly hair is exposed to temperatures above 350°F, it will probably suffer heat damage, therefore, getting a much looser pattern or losing its curl pattern altogether. So if you have tools with temperature control, stick to temperatures below 350°F.

5. Blow Out Your Hair First

I know it takes more time, but it’s definitely worth it! Blowing out your hair stretches your hair’s curls, therefore reducing the number of passes you need to do with your flat iron to get it straight.

6. Flat Iron with The Chase Method

For this method, you’ll take a small section and comb through it with a rat-tail comb. Once the section is detangled, you’ll comb the section one more time, but this time, you’ll pause 2 to 4 inches from your scalp. Close the hot flat iron on the hair that’s above your comb. Leave half an inch between the flat iron and the comb so that you don’t end up with melted plastic on your hair.

Now, start to slowly pull the comb and the flat iron through the remaining length of your hair. If you’re not happy with your results, you may go over it one more time to try and get it silkier, but remember the more passes you do, the higher the risk you’ll suffer heat damage. Repeat until you’re done straightening your whole wig.

If you buy a good-quality, deep wave wig on Luvmehair and follow all these tips, then the likelihood of suffering any heat damage is really low.
