A Review of the Ford Ranger

Big adventures can start in a small truck. In this article, you’ll get an honest and informative look into the 2021 Ford Ranger. The three available trim models, optional add on features and available special packages will be summarized in this Ford Ranger Review.

Trim Selection Overview There are three models of trim that can be chosen from for the Ranger All three are equipped with the same engine build. Additionally buyers can select from either a 4×2 or 4xr4 drivetrain in any of the Ranger’s trim models and each of them have additional optional features.

  • Ranger XL
  • Ranger XLT
  • Ranger Lariat

The Engine The Ranger has a 2.3 liter Ecoboost I4 (four cylinder) engine and has a maximum towing capacity of 7500 pounds. Depending on whether the truck has a 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain, the Ranger is capable of between 20-21 miles per gallon driving in the city and 24-26 miles to a gallon when travelling on the highway. The better mpg is attributed to the 4×2.

Special Packages for the XL  All Rangers feature connection ability to an app called FordPass connect and come standard with a wifi hotspot right in the cab. The Ranger XL has three special packages available to select from.The first two are the SXT and SXT Special Edition packages which include:

  • 18 Inch black alloy wheels
  • Privacy glass with rear defrost
  • DualZone climate control comfort system

The third package is the FX2, which is only available with a 4X2 drivetrain. This is the 4X2 Ranger to drive off the blacktop and onto new adventures. features include:

  • 17 or 18 Inch OWL off road tires
  • Off road suspension package
  • Tow hooks

XLT Special Packages All Ranger XLT (and Lariat) models feature Ford’s Copilot 360 technology. This is an assemblage of safety integrations such as Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) lane keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking on pre-collision assistance, automatic high beams and a rear view camera.

There are two other available packages for the XLT. First up is the Tech Package, featuring:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Sensory Technology
  • Navigation System

The other package is only available to buyers who opt for the 4×4 drivetrain. It’s similar to the 4X2 package mentioned above with the XL FX2, but there are a few added bonuses on the FX4:

  • Shocks tuned for off road travel
  • Brush Plate
  • Skid plates

Features of the Lariat The Ranger Lariat model is a special package in its own right. This luxury edition of Ranger pickup is full of high en technology and comfort enhancing add ons such as:

  • Heated bucket style front seats with leather accents
  • Eight wat driver and six way passenger power seats with lumbar support contrl
  • B&O Sound System with ten premium quality speakers and an HD radio (SuperCrew only)
  • Stunning LED Headlamps

Cab Options There are two choices of cab available on the 4×2 drivetrain and three on the 4×4. The Ranger Tremor package is the only option that is exclusive to the 4×4. Both the Super Cab and Super Crew cab are available on either.

Other Available Options Additional options that can be selected for the Ranger include a variety of choices in bonuses and two cross bed tool boxes. One is black; the other is bright and includes additional storage. Here are the other available add ons:

  • Keyless entry using a code pad on the driver door

  • Tommen bed covers available in hardcover, foldable soft cover or a retracting bed cover
