How exciting. You’d made that big sale at work, and now you and the team are off to celebrate. Really celebrate. You’re not going down to the usual watering hole for a couple of lazy beers in the sun. The boss is taking you to the beloved old cocktail bar up the street. It’s expensive, classy, and intimidating. You know it’s going to be a great night, but you haven’t the foggiest idea what to drink.
If this is you, don’t worry. You’ve come to the right place. These are the 5 timeless cocktails you can rely on anytime without judgement. They also taste phenomenal. So raise a glass, here we go.
Gin & Tonic
You’ve probably already heard of this one. If you’re asking what’s in it, then you’re overthinking it. The Gin & Tonic is just that, gin & tonic, typically served with a slice of lemon or lime. It’s refreshing, uncomplicated, and a safe order in any establishment. However, you must be prepared. Fancier joints will ask you which gin you’d like, so make sure you remember your favourite brands.
Old Fashioned
In the realm of traditional cocktails, you can’t look past the grandfather of them all, the old fashioned. If you enjoy the warmth of whisky, this is the ideal way to enjoy it – with some orange twist, a large ice cube, and a fancy glass. Perfection. The old fashioned was actually starting to lose popularity around the 2000s, but then hit TV show Mad Man gave the drink a well-deserved reboost. Don Draper, the charismatic protagonist, simply couldn’t go a day without one. Someone should Youtube to mp3 his order and use it at the bar to try and score a free drink. Just an idea.
Vodka Martini
James Bond will insist that a martini should be shaken, not stirred, but the truth is, stirred is a sound option here. The vodka martini consists of vodka, vermouth and lemon peel, maybe a green olive if you’re lucky. The martini has been dubbed as one of America’s perfect inventions and it’s hard to disagree. A word of caution, however. Martini’s are notoriously strong, so don’t outpace yourself, cowboy.
Negroni
The negroni is a fun option, perfect for that work celebration, or even to make and indulge from home. It’s packed with contrasting flavours of bitterness and sweetness that you just can’t get from beer or wine. The exciting drink consists of gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, typically served with an ice cube and lemon peel. Some people insist that the negroni tastes earthy, but we’ll let you be the judge. While you’re enjoying your negroni, be sure to check out this stunning performance of Hey Ma! From Sally Seltman.
Espresso Martini
Recently, the espresso martini has witnessed a surge in popularity. I think we can pin this down to a few reasons. One, it’s delicious. two, it’s unique, and most importantly, three – It keeps you caffeinated. News flash: Not only does the espresso martini give you a buzz, it’ll keep you energetic and focused. If the night is starting to get a little quiet, order a round of these for the table and you and your mates will be back in fighting form in no time.
